Certification Description
The Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) credential certifies that an individual has a baseline knowledge of safety practices that can help ensure safer and healthier work environments. This certification is for managers, supervisors, executives, directors and employees. These individuals may not have safety as a primary duty, but they do have the knowledge and competency to strengthen the foundation of safety across their organization.
Healthcare professionals with this specialty credential may have career advancement opportunities and higher pay that other professionals may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of common hazards and controls, such as cutting, welding, grinding, ladders, platforms, confined spaces and rigging
- Ability to recognize chronic health hazards
- Understand the basics of first aid procedures, universal precautions and fire safety procedures
- Ability to consult with the BCSP Code of Ethics
- Comprehension of behavioral-based safety observations
- Ensure that proper waste management disposal techniques are followed
- Ability to follow basic concepts of ergonomics

- Prerequisites: Applicant must have 30 hours of safety, health and environmental training; applicant must have 2+ years of supervisory experience OR 4+ years of work experience in any industry

- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 5 years
