Certification Description
The Occupational Health Nurse Case Manager (CM) certification certifies that a nurse has the knowledge to properly coordinate comprehensive healthcare services for a patient after an illness/injury. An occupational health nurse case manager typically will be proactive in getting a patient the health care services that are required so the patient is able to return to work or other activities.
Nurses with this credential may have career advancement opportunities and higher pay that other professionals may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Ability to use technology and intergrade patient and employee records into a computer-based system
- Knowledge of how to implement disability management strategies
- Understanding of liability issues in case management
- Competency in quality control and improving quality control
- Knowledge of OSHA-required documentation
- Familiarity with health care programs and health care delivery systems, such as health insurance
- Proficiency working within clinical guidelines, clinical pathways and standards of care

- Prerequisites: Applicants must hold an active RN license; applicant must have 10+ contact hours of continuing education in case management within the last 5 years; applicant must be an active Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S); other requirements may apply

- Time: 180 minutes

- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 4 years
