Certification Description
The National Healthcare Disaster Professional (NHDP-BC) certification certifies that a healthcare professional has the knowledge and training necessary to assist in all phases of disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery. Healthcare professionals who hold this certification have the goal of promoting successful outcomes during a disaster.
Healthcare professionals with this specialty credential may have career advancement opportunities and higher pay that other professionals may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of personal, organizational and community safety measures
- Understanding of mitigation principles
- Knowledge of reducing risks and Hazard Mitigation Plans
- Ability to complete need-based assessments
- Knowledge of triage systems
- Comprehension of disaster terminology
- Ability to follow disaster-relief protocols, including short-term recoveries and long-term recoveries

- Issuing Organization: American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
- Prerequisites: Applicants must have 3 years of disaster related experience, within the last 10 years, in an eligible medical profession (see ANCC website for details); within the last 2 years, applicant must have participated in an emergency operation plan or completed an eligible disaster exercise; applicant must hold a certificate in all 4 of the following FEMA courses: IS-100.b: Introduction to Incident Command System, ICS 100, IS-200.b: ICS for Single Resource and Initial Action Incidents, IS-700.a: National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction, IS-800.b: National Response Framework, An Introduction

- Time: 210 minutes
- Cost: $395; $270 for American Nurses Association members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 5 years
