Certification Description
The Initial IV Therapy Certification (NALPN) credential certifies that a licensed practical nurse (LPN)/licensed vocational nurse (LVN) has attended the NALPN IV therapy course and has passed the certification exam upon completion of the course. LPNs/LVNs with this certification may be able to initiate IV lines and administer IV medications, blood products and TPN (IV nutrition).
LPNs/LVNs with this credential may be able to perform additional job duties and have career opportunities that other LPNs/LVNs may not be eligible for.

The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of body fluid composition and balances
- Ability to initiate and monitor transfusions
- Ability to recognize transfusion reactions
- Ability to adhere to guidelines and ethical concerns
- Knowledge of common IV medications
- Ability to oversee parenteral nutrition
