OVERVIEW
Certification Description
The Initial Gerontology Certification (NALPN) credential certifies that a licensed practical nurse (LPN)/licensed vocational nurse (LVN) has attended the NALPN gerontology course and has passed the certification exam upon completion of the course.
LPNs/LVNs with this specialty credential have proven that they have the knowledge and skills to care for the older adult and elderly patient population. They may also have career opportunities that other LPNs/LVNs may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of the theories of gerontology
- Ability to encourage wellness
- Understanding of psychological disorders and how the various disorders impact personality and health
- Ability to assist patients in death and dying situations
- Ensure that all legal and ethical considerations are met with every patient
- Understanding of how to facilitate self-care for patients
- Knowledge of neurological disorders
