Certification Description
The HIV/AIDS Certified Registered Nurse (ACRN) certification certifies that an individual has the experience and knowledge to work with patients with HIV and AIDS. Nurses with this certification are able to address the physical, emotional and psychosocial issues of HIV and AIDS patients.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Familiarity with the basic principles of epidemiology
- Knowledge of disease prevention
- Understanding of how to complete risk assessments based on history
- Competency with laboratory evaluations
- Knowledge of HIV life cycle
- Familiarity with pharmacology and antiretroviral therapies
- Proficiency working with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders

- Issuing Organization: HIV/AIDS Nursing Certification Board (HANCB)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a current RN; 2+ years of experience in the clinical practice, education, management, or research related to HIV/AIDS nursing are recommended but not required
- Questions: 250
- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $260 for ANAC members, $400 for non ANAC members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 4 years
