Certification Description
The Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner (DCNP) certification certifies that a nurse practitioner has the advanced skill level and knowledge to care for patients with conditions and diseases of the skin. Nurse practitioners with this credential have shown that they are proficient in assessment, diagnosis, treatment and education of this patient population.
They have proven that they are knowledgeable of the latest standards of practice and care and have the training and skills necessary to provide the highest quality of care to their patients.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of skin conditions and diseases
- Understanding of cosmetic dermatology
- Competency working with evidence-based treatments
- Willingness to consult with other healthcare professionals when necessary
- Ability to analyze research data to seek out effective treatment options
- Familiarity with phototherapy procedures
- Ability to assist in dermatology procedures
Exam Objectives
The DCNP exam covers the following topic areas:
- Assess and diagnose acute and chronic conditions that occur across the life span in dermatology
- Prescribe interventions, including evidence-based treatment, therapies, and procedures
- Teach patients, significant others, community, and colleagues about prevention and management of dermatological conditions
- Consult for and with peers and other health care professionals regarding specific cases
- Analyze research data in order to implement effective evidence-based data

Exam Details
- Issuing Organization: Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must have a master’s degree in nursing; applicants must hold an active Nurse Practitioner (NP) license; applicants must have completed 3,000+ hours of recent experience in dermatology nursing
- Questions: 175
- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $300 for NP Society members, $300 for current DNC certification holders and $400 for NP Society non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 3 years
