Certification Description
The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential certifies that an individual has the education, skills and experience to assist with duties in the operating room. These healthcare professionals have shown a mastery of skills related to surgical procedures, aseptic technique and patient care.
Professionals with this voluntary credential may have career opportunities and higher pay that other professionals may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of microbiology and the classification of microorganisms
- Ability to properly handle specimens and tissues
- Understanding of anatomy and physiology
- Ability to troubleshoot surgical equipment and clean necessary tools for surgical procedures
- Ensure that infection control procedures are adhered to
- Understanding of the stages of wound healing
- Knowledge of pharmacology and pharmacological interactions
Exam Objectives
Exam Details
- Issuing Organization: The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a graduate of a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited surgical technology program
- Questions: 175 (150 scored)
- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $190 for AST members and $290 for non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 2 years
