Certification Description
The Certified Surgical Services Manager (CSSM) certification certifies that an RN has the skill level and expertise to manage and direct staff, programs and budgets in the surgical care setting. Nurses with this credential demonstrate proficiency in an administrator or managerial role.
Nurses with this specialty certification may have career advancement opportunities and higher pay that other nurses may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of normal and abnormal physiology and anatomy
- Understanding of patient relationship management
- Knowledge of patient rights, privacy and autonomy
- Ability to fully understand operational management as it pertains to surgery and hospital settings
- Comprehension of standards of practice, in addition to ethical and legal considerations
- Ability to prevent hemodynamic complications
- Familiarity with proper human resource management practices

- Issuing Organization: Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in arts or science; applicant must hold an active RN license; if applicant is a CNOR Certified RN, they must have 2+ years and 2,400+ hours of surgical management experience; non-CNOR Certified RN applicants must have 4+ years and 4,800+ hours of surgical management experience; applicant must be currently working in perioperative nursing; applicants must meet coursework requirements
- Questions: 180
- Time: 225 minutes
- Cost: $275 for CNOR certified nurses and $350 for non-CNOR certified nurses
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 5 years
