Certification Description
The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential certifies that an individual has the expert skills, education and experience needed to assist surgeons and nurses during the surgical process.
This is not an entry-level certification. Professionals with this certification have shown mastery of skills related to surgical procedures, aseptic technique and patient care. Professionals with this voluntary credential may have career opportunities and higher pay that other professionals may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of aseptic techniques for infection control
- Ability to identify when fluid replacement is needed
- Understanding of advanced anatomy and physiology
- Ability to mix pharmaceutical solutions in a sterile field
- Ability to ensure infection control procedures are adhered to
- Understanding of the stages of wound healing
- Knowledge of proper patient care before, during and after surgical procedures

Exam Details
- Issuing Organization: The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a graduate of a CAAHEP accredited Surgical First Assisting Program
- Questions: 175 (150 scored)
- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $190 for AST members and $290 for non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 2 years
