Certification Description
The Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) certification certifies that an RN has the skill level and expertise to care for patients with chronic illnesses and disabilities so that they can restore, maintain and promote optimal health.
This credential validates the RN’s experience and commitment to rehabilitation nursing care. Nurses with this specialty certification may have career advancement opportunities and higher pay that other nurses may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of nursing theories and how to integrate evidence-based theories into practice
- Understanding of rehabilitation standards
- Competency working with pharmacologic and non-pharmacological interventions
- Capability to complete Rancho Los Amigos, Glasgow, Mini Mental State Examination, ASIA, pain analog scales
- Knowledge of psychosocial disorders
- Familiarity with musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological systems
- Willingness to comply with legislative, legal and ethical issues

- Issuing Organization: Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN)
- Prerequisites: Applicants must hold an active RN license; applicant must have completed one of the following: 2+ years of RN experience in a rehab facility within the past 5 years and/or 1+ year of RN experience in a rehab facility and 1+ year of post baccalaureate experience within the last 5 years; testing takes place between June 1-30 and December 1-30 only
- Questions: 175 (150 scored)
- Time: 180 minutes
- Cost: $285 for ARN members and $425 for non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 5 years
