Certification Description
The Certified Registered Nurse Infusion (CRNI) certification certifies that an individual has the experience and knowledge to work in the infusion nursing field. Nurses with this certification are up-to-date on technological advances.
Nurses who hold this certification may obtain higher paying jobs which other candidates are ineligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Understanding of electronic infusion devices
- Familiarity with nonvascular route access
- Knowledge of peripherally inserted central catheters and other access devices
- Understanding of anti-infection agents
- Competency with antineoplastic therapy
- Knowledge of ethics and laws
- Familiarity with pharmacology and various prescribed therapies
- Proficiency working with biologic administration
Exam Objectives
The CRNI exam covers the following topic areas:
- Technology and Clinical Applications (22%)
- Fluid and Electrolyte Balance (14%)
- Pharmacology (13%)
- Infection Prevention and Control (14%)
- Special Populations (9%)
- Transfusion Therapy (9%)
- Antineoplastic and Biologic Therapy (9%)
- Parental Nutrition (9%)
Exam Details
- Issuing Organization: Infusion Nurses Society (INS)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a current RN; applicant must have 1,600+ hours of experience in infusion therapy within the last 2 years
- Questions: 170 (150 scored)
- Time: 180 minutes
- Cost: $310 for INS members for pre-registration, $360 for INS members for regular registration and $450 for non-members for pre-registration, $500 for non-members for regular registration
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 3 years
