Certification Description
The Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) certification validates that a nurse has the skills and expertise to care for patients before, during and after surgery. CNOR certified nurses are knowledgeable of the latest standards of practice and care and have the training and skills necessary to provide the highest quality of care to their patients.
Nurses with this specialty credential may have career advancement opportunities and higher pay that other nurses may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of normal and abnormal physiology and anatomy
- Understanding of allergies and alternative medicine
- Aware of patient rights, privacy and autonomy
- Ability to optimize patient responses for infection control and other conditions
- Ability to assist with pain management
- Comprehension of standards of practice, in addition to ethical and legal considerations
- Ability to prevent hemodynamic complications
- Familiarity with proper discharge practices

- Issuing Organization: Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI)
- Prerequisites: Applicants must hold an active RN license; applicants must have completed 2+ years and 2,400+ hours of experience, with 1,200+ hours being in intraoperative nursing

- Time: 225 minutes
- Cost: $395
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 5 years
