Certification Description
The Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) certification certifies that an individual has the experience and knowledge to work with pediatric patients and their families. Nurses with this credential can work in a variety of healthcare settings. They can do routine check-ups, educate parents and follow patients during the course of treatment.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Understanding of how to conduct physical assessments and how to interpret physical assessment findings
- Knowledge of how to assess for pain
- Understanding of palliative care and quality of life
- Competency in providing psychosocial support to patients and families
- Knowledge of coping mechanisms
- Understanding of how to identify malnutrition, abuse and neglect
- Familiarity working with family and community-based resources

- Issuing Organization: Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a current RN; applicant must have 1,800+ hours of pediatric clinical experience within the last 2 years or 5+ years of pediatric nursing experience and 3,000 hours in pediatric nursing with 1,000 hours being in the past 2 years.
- Questions: 175 (150 scored)
- Time: 180 minutes
- Cost: $295
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every year
