Certification Description
Certified Ophthalmology Coder (COPC) credential certifies individuals to have the ability to code physician summaries and procedures by giving the correct modifier coding assignments in the topic range of ophthalmology.
The COPC credential may lead to career opportunities and higher paying jobs that uncertified auditors may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Comprehension of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
- Understanding of the proper coding techniques for ophthalmology procedures
- Knowledge of Medicare billing and it’s regulations
- Grasp of coding assignments as they pertain to ophthalmology, in addition to general medical coding
- Ability to evaluate the 1995 and 1997 Documentation Guidelines for coding
Exam Objectives
- Ability to read and abstract physician office notes and procedure notes to apply correct ICD-10-CM, CPT®, HCPCS Level II and modifier coding assignments
- Evaluation and management (both the 1995 and 1997 Documentation Guidelines)
- Rules and regulations of Medicare billing including (but not limited to) incident to, teaching situations, shared visits, consultations and global surgery
- Coding of surgical procedures performed by ophthalmologists such as thoracentesis, laceration repair, fracture care, foreign body removal, etc.
- Coding of moderate sedation
- Time-based coding
- Medical terminology
- Anatomy and physiology
