Certification Description
The Certified Nephrology Nurse-Nurse Practitioner (CNN-NP) certification certifies that an individual has the experience and knowledge to work with patients who suffer from kidney diseases and injuries. Nurse practitioners with this certification will assist in providing comprehensive assessments, treatment and monitoring of patients with renal issues.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Understanding of pathologic processes of kidney disease
- Familiarity with CKD
- Knowledge of how to establish a holistic plan for each individual
- Understanding of suitable teaching techniques to use with patients and families
- Competency working with pharmacology interventions
- Knowledge of evidence-based therapies
- Familiarity with interdisciplinary approaches across the continuum of care

- Issuing Organization: Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a current RN; applicant must be certified as a nurse practitioner; applicant must have a master’s degree, or higher; applicant must have completed 2,000+ hours of experience as a NP practicing in nephrology nursing in the last 2 years; applicant must have 60+ contact hours of approved continuing education credit in nephrology nursing
- Questions: 175 (150 scored)
- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $350 for members of the American Nephrology Nurses Association, the National Kidney Foundation and the Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs and $375 for non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 5 years
