OVERVIEW
Certification Description
The NAPNES Certified in I.V. Therapy (IVT) credential certifies that a licensed practical nurse (LPN)/licensed vocational nurse (LVN) has achieved a high level of knowledge and skill in IV therapy. LPNs/LVNs with this credential may be able to administer IV medications and IV therapy dependent on the regulations in his or her state.
LPNs/LVNs with this credential may be able to perform additional job duties and have career opportunities that other LPNs/LVNs may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Ability to operate pumps and other equipment necessary for IV therapy
- Understanding venipuncture techniques
- Ability to compute flow rates for infusions
- Ensure that proper medications are given
- Knowledge of potential complications from IV therapy
- Knowledge of the different IV fluids
Exam Objectives
- Identifying the role of fluid and electrolyte imbalance in homeostasis
- Understanding the pharmacology aspect of IV therapy
- Demonstrating knowledge of the different IV fluids
- Operating IV pumps and equipment
- Calculating flow rate of infusions
- Venipuncture
- Identifying potential complications from IV therapy
