Certification Description
The Certified Hospice and Palliative Pediatric Nurse (CHPPN) certification certifies that an individual has the experience and knowledge to provide care for terminally ill pediatric patients. Nurses with this certification can work in hospice centers, nursing facilities, hospitals and in a patient’s home. A CHPPN can also provide education and direction to other nursing staff.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Understanding of age-appropriate treatments and principles
- Knowledge of pain management and the etiology of pain
- Understanding of nutritional and metabolic processes
- Competency working with common psychosocial, emotional and spiritual patient and family concerns
- Knowledge of evidence-based palliative management for the body systems
- Understanding of when a pediatric patient enters the terminal phase of a condition
- Familiarity with legal regulations and guidelines

- Issuing Organization: Hospice & Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a current RN; applicant must have 500+ hours in hospice and/or pediatric palliative care over the last year or 1,000+ hours in the last 2 years; applicant must submit a copy of work and educational records
- Questions: 150 (135 scored)
- Time: 180 minutes
- Cost: $295 for HPNA members; $415 for non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 4 years
