Certification Description
The Certified Gastroenterology Registered Nurse (CGRN) certification certifies that a nurse has the knowledge and expertise to competently care for patients with gastrointestinal diseases. Nurses with the CGRN certification may assist in caring for patients during gastrointestinal surgeries and procedures.
Nurses with this credential may have career advancement opportunities and higher pay that other professionals may not be eligible for.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Ability to analyze a patient’s health status through tests, assessments and data collection
- Knowledge of how to efficiently develop a plan of care
- Understanding of proper specimen collection, transportation and storage
- Competency in pharmacology, in regards to endoscopic and non-endoscopic procedures
- Capability to administer medications and fluids
- Knowledge of ergonomics
- Familiarity with electrical, laser, radiation and chemical procedures
- Proficiency working with multi-drug resistance organisms

Exam Details
- Issuing Organization: American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN)
- Prerequisites: Applicants must hold an active RN or APRN license; applicant must have 2+ years of full-time experience in GI/endoscopy or have 4,000 hours of part-time work in GI/endoscopy in the last 5 years; applicant must be able to submit information of 2 practitioners who can verify work experience
- Questions: 175
- Time: 180 minutes
- Cost: $420 for SGNA members and $505 for non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 5 years
