Certification Description
The Certified Corrections Nurse/Manager (CCN/M) certification certifies that a nurse has the knowledge to work with legal offenders and staff, in a correctional environment. Nurses with this certification are correctional nurse managers and they may be responsible for managing staff, implementing agency procedures and policies.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Ability to be comfortable working with offenders
- Familiarity with management techniques
- Knowledge of diversity within the correctional populations
- Understanding of emergency response procedures and personal liability
- Competency with offenders’ rights and level of healthcare
- Knowledge of styles of conflict management
- Familiarity with American with Disabilities Act, Civil Rights Act of 1964, Fair Labor Standards Act and Prison Litigation Reform Act
- Proficiency working with mental health assessments and crisis interventions

- Issuing Organization: American Correctional Association (ACA)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a licensed RN and hold an associate, bachelor of science or master of science in nursing degree, or a 3-year nursing diploma; applicant must have 1 year work experience in correctional nursing in present position as a correctional nurse manager
- Questions: 200
- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $235 for ACA members and $295 for non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 3 years
