Certification Description
The Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) certification certifies that an individual has the experience and knowledge to work with patients that are undergoing aesthetic procedures. Nurses with this certification typically will work alongside dermatologists and plastic surgeons.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Understanding of how to monitor patient status pre-treatment, during treatment and post-treatment
- Knowledge of how to properly administer treatment during the various stages of the procedures
- Understanding of laser and light therapies
- Competency working with non-surgical procedures, such as aesthetic injectable procedures and energy therapies
- Knowledge of how to teach patients in optimizing their recovery outcomes
- Familiarity working with clinical skin care techniques

- Issuing Organization: Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board (PSNCB)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a current RN; applicant must be currently working in one of the following areas: Plastic/aesthetic surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, facial plastic surgery; applicant must have completed 2+ years of nursing experience, in a core specialty, within the last 3 years; applicant must have completed 1,000+ hours of core specialty nursing experience within the last 3 years; have a supervising core physician, who holds a current full and unrestricted license, endorse the application

- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $195 for ISPAN members AAPC members, $295 non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 3 years
