Certification Description
The Certification for Registered Nurse in Ophthalmology (CRNO) certification certifies that an individual has the experience and knowledge to work in ophthalmic nursing. Nurses with this certification work directly with ophthalmologists and can assist with the treatment of patients that suffer from a range of diseases, injuries and illnesses of their eyes.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Understanding of ocular development and conditions
- Familiarity with rheumatologic disorders
- Knowledge of various pharmacology administration routes and techniques, including topical and injections
- Understanding of diagnostic testing and procedures
- Competency working with communicable diseases
- Knowledge of ethics and laws
- Familiarity with intraocular and extraocular issues and procedures

- Issuing Organization: American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses (ASORN)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a current RN; applicant must have 2+ years of full-time employment as an ophthalmic RN
- Questions: 250
- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $325 for ASORN members, $425 for non-members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 5 years
