Certification Description
The Advanced HIV/AIDS Certified Registered Nurse (AACRN) certification certifies that an individual has the advanced education, experience and knowledge to work with patients with HIV and AIDS. Nurses with this certification are able to address physical, emotional and psychosocial issues of HIV and AIDS patients.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Understanding of risk-reduction interventions
- Familiarity with the principles of epidemiology
- Knowledge of counseling techniques
- Understanding of how to complete risk assessments based on history
- Competency with laboratory evaluations
- Knowledge of HIV structure and the HIV life cycle
- Familiarity with pharmacology and antiretroviral therapies
- Proficiency working with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders

- Issuing Organization: HIV/AIDS Nursing Certification Board (HANCB)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be a current RN; applicant must have a master’s degree or higher; applicant must have 3+ years of experience as a RN in the last 5 years; applicant must have 2,000 hours of HIV/AIDS nursing within the last 5 years
- Questions: 250
- Time: 240 minutes
- Cost: $350 for ANAC members, $450 for non ANAC members
- Re-certification and certification renewal: Every 4 years
