OVERVIEW
Certification Description
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) credential certifies that an individual has the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide emergency medical care and transportation to ill and injured patients. Healthcare professionals with this certification can perform the same basic life-saving interventions as emergency medical technicians (EMTs). In addition, AEMTs can start intravenous access on patients who need IV medications. AEMTs also have more advanced education in areas such as human anatomy and physiology.
Skills Focus
The certification focuses on the following areas:
- Knowledge of basic anatomy, body functions and physiology
- Proficient in inserting intravenous access
- Ability to perform CPR and advanced life support
- Understanding of how to control/minimize bleeding
- Knowledge of spinal immobilization
- Proficiency in assisting patients with breathing through medical techniques and devices
- Ability to complete various first aid procedures that can assist with the comfort and care of the patient
- Comprehension of anatomical positions
- Ability to deliver intravenous medications
- Ability to maintain medical and legal standards
- Adherence to standard precautions/OSHA regulations

Exam Details
- Issuing Organization: National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)
- Prerequisites: Applicant must be 18 years of age or older; applicant must have current National Registry certification (NREMT) or state license at the EMT level, or higher; applicant must have completed a state-approved AEMT course that meets/exceeds National Medical Services Education Standards for the AEMT; course must have been completed within the last 2 years; applicant must have current CPR-BLS for healthcare providers certification; applicant must complete the EMT cognitive (knowledge) examination and the psychomotor (skills) examination; tThe Psychomotor Exam is a “hands-on” exam.
